At Springside School we have an Eco team of 8 children. One child from each class and two children from class 7. They meet regularly with Hamer’s Eco team and work together on projects. Currently we are working towards our Green Flag status and hope to achieve this soon. To visit the eco-school's website just click the link on the right to see all the things they are involved in.
Since the school opened the eco team have helped to start composting all the school vegetable waste and recycling waste paper. They have also been involved in planting two forest school sites; one next to Hamer’s MUGA and one in the wet area next to the adventure play area on the field.
Willow tunnel and Walkways
Groundwork staff came to help with the planting, and both areas have willow sculptures and paths which are accessible to everyone. The Eco teams have planted containers to help make our school look nice and have grown potatoes and other vegetables which the school kitchen cooked for us. Click the green triangle to see what else Groundwork do.
Every week children from both schools take part in eco projects. Over several months we have made bird feeders, insect homes, wind chimes, mud monsters, dens, and have had a birthday party for badger! These activities have been enjoyed by all the children in Springside and by many from Hamer too, it's also helped to encourage wildlife to our school grounds.
Hanging Bird Feeders
The hanging of Bird Feeders together with planting and landscaping has been carried out around Springside with Hamer School over the winter and includes extensions to walkways and extra trees and bushes. Also new beds have been created for pupils to grow their own vegetables and flowers. The collective projects of landscaping and eco work are proving to be a great success by all involved and has brought the pupils of both schools into closer contact both in and out of the traditional classroom environment.
